Even though she did not know any foreign languages, she was hired as a linguist. It was to ensure that she would be receiving the same pay as her male colleagues. The glass ceiling followed Joan since her student days \u2013 despite her outstanding performance at school, she could not receive a full degree in mathematics from Cambridge University. Until 1948, these were exclusively awarded to men.<\/p>\n<p>Alan and Joan immediately got along well. Having shared interests, they started spending more and more time together. Turing was happy to finally find someone he could talk with about mathematics like equals.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring of 1941, Alan proposed to Joan Clarke. Soon after their engagement, he came out to her about his sexuality. She was not surprised; indeed, she had already suspected that Alan was a homosexual man.<\/p>\n<p>Few months later, Turing broke off their engagement. Their shared passions were not enough to sustain a marriage for the rest of their lives. Nonetheless, Joan remained on friendly terms with her would-be husband.
