Scientists working for an agency of such importance as Bletchley Park had to be thoroughly vetted by intelligence officers. During the war, however, the mathematician was too important an asset to be removed from his post.<\/p>\n<p>In January of 1952, Turing fell victim to a burglary. While the thief did not steal anything particularly valuable from his house, this would mark the beginning of the end for the scientist. It turned out that the culprit was a friend of Turing\u2019s lover and thus the police, instead of focusing on the burglary, started an investigation into \u201cgross indecency\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Turing was convicted and offered an ultimatum by the court: undergo hormonal therapy or be served a prison sentence. He chose the option that allowed him to continue working in his field. This so-called therapy constituted psychiatric consultations and a chemical castration via synthetic oestrogen injections. Despite his compliance with this \u201ctreatment\u201d, which had considerable negative effects on his mental wellbeing, Turing was still barred from doing a lot of the work that gave his life meaning.<\/p>\n<p>On 8 June 1954, Turing\u2019s body was found in his bed, postmortem examination showing that he had passed away the previous day. Next to the bed lay a half-eaten apple.
