1. Strongboxes and the fist secretary’s office

The room, its layout changed specifically for the Enigma Cipher Centre’s exhibit, housed the secretariat of the Party’s first secretary and, behind the wall, his private office (now the Centre’s social room). As former head of the Party’s regional headquarters’ archive observed, then offices of the secretaries and department heads were designed as (…) a manifestation of gigantomania, designed to mark the position of the party and individual senior functionaries. (…) They featured strongboxes built into the walls and high-gloss furniture and wall panelling. Some of the surviving furnishings include the 1949 strongboxes and the now walled-in passageway to the adjacent room.
